Democrats’ Darling Lap Dogs: The Media’s Unconcerned Stance on Doug Emhoff’s Affair

Doug Emhoff’s scandalous past is significant, highlighting media hypocrisy once again.

Recently, the second gentleman Emhoff acknowledged cheating on his first wife, Kerstin Emhoff, leading to their divorce in 2009.

Even worse, it was revealed that his affair was with his children’s nanny, a teacher at their school, who eventually became pregnant from the relationship. The details surrounding what happened next remain undisclosed, as Emhoff and his wife’s campaign push for the scandal to be swept under the rug without further inquiry.

Major media outlets are actively aiding in downplaying the situation. The New York Times highlighted that this was a “long-ago affair”, while The Washington Post noted that “the affair ended years before he began dating Vice President Harris.”

The double standard is evident, as the media extensively covered Donald Trump’s alleged 2006 affair with Stormy Daniels; no news is considered too old if it casts Republicans in a negative light.

Top media platforms have been actively promoting Emhoff’s positive image. He appeared on Late Night with Steven Colbert in May, joyfully recounting how he met Kamala on a blind date.

In a July 26 CNN article titled “How Doug Emhoff is amplifying his wife’s historic presidential bid,” Emhoff is referred to as Kamala’s “closest confidante and best surrogate.”

The anecdote of how Emhoff discovered Joe Biden had dropped out after a SoulCycle class with friends went viral, reinforcing the narrative of Doug as a personable, modern, and supportive partner.

Team Kamala has capitalized on Emhoff’s likability by even selling merchandise featuring a young Doug on mugs and t-shirts in their official campaign store.

However, as liberal journalist Mickey Kaus pointed out on X: “Editors: If it’s relevant to the election to profile Emhoff in your publication (typically in an absurdly positive light), this story is relevant too. If readers need to know the good details about him, they should also be told the bad details.”

While First Ladies often champion moral causes, it raises the question of what a First Gentleman like Emhoff, a Hollywood lawyer with a scandalous past, would advocate for.
