A hunter in Alaska is currently recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a bear and shot in the leg while trying to defend himself, according to US authorities.

He was accompanied by a hunting companion who fired the shot during the incident in a remote area near the Resurrection Pass trail.

However, it remains unclear who actually fired the shot that hit the man while he was trying to fend off the bear, as mentioned by Alaska State Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain.

The injured hunter, whose identity has not been disclosed, was airlifted to a hospital in Anchorage.

The bear involved in the incident was killed, added Mr. DeSpain.
