With less than a month to go until the first Republican presidential debate of the 2024 campaign, seven candidates have met the qualifications for a spot on stage in Milwaukee. To qualify for the debate, candidates needed to have at least 1% support in three high-quality national polls or a mix of national and early-state polls between July 1 and August 21. They also needed a minimum of 40,000 donors, with 200 in 20 or more states. Donald Trump, the current front-runner, has satisfied the requirements but is considering boycotting and holding a competing event. Ron DeSantis, Florida governor and seen as Trump’s top rival, may be the top target on stage if Trump is absent. Other candidates who have met the qualifications include Tim Scott, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Chris Christie, and Doug Burgum. Mike Pence, Asa Hutchinson, Francis Suarez, Larry Elder, Perry Johnson, and Will Hurd are still working on satisfying the requirements.
