Biden criticizes Jan. 6 events and Trump in consecutive speeches

During a campaign stop at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, President Joe Biden compared former President Donald Trump and his supporters to Confederates who embraced the “lost cause” that the Civil War was about state’s rights and not slavery. He leaned heavily on the events of Jan. 6, 2021, as campaign fodder to step up his rhetoric against Trump and his followers. Biden emphasized that slavery was the cause of the Civil War, disputing claims that it was about state’s rights.

Biden claimed that a “second lost cause” is now focused on the 2020 presidential election, with Trump and his followers promoting the false narrative that the election was rigged. He emphasized that political violence should always be rejected and stated that Trump is a loser who refuses to concede defeat.

Biden also criticized Trump’s response to a recent mass school shooting in Iowa, mischaracterizing his comments by claiming that Trump said “All those kids dead. We have to get over it.” In reality, Trump expressed condolences and love for the victims and their families while urging them to move forward.
