Living in rural America comes with numerous advantages. The picturesque greenlands, rolling farm hills, and enchanting starlit skies define the charm of the neighborhood.

In small towns, friendships blossom into family ties, and cherished traditions and recipes are passed down through generations.

I grew up in a rural community.

Today, I continue to reside in the same Southwest Virginia community that has been home to my grandparents, great-grandparents, and even great-great-grandparents.

However, despite the comforting pace of rural life, the reality of being left behind in modern advancements becomes more apparent when dealing with everyday tasks and responsibilities.

While rural communities have historically faced challenges in accessing modern amenities, such as electricity, there is a growing frustration in the current era. Issues like poor phone signals and lack of reliable internet connectivity have become more pronounced.

Back in the early 20th century, farmers fought for access to electricity to boost productivity. Through cooperatives, they eventually succeeded in bringing essential modern conveniences like refrigeration to rural areas.

Fast forward to the present day, where WIFI and HVAC systems are considered basic necessities regardless of location. Yet, rural communities still struggle with unaffordable electricity rates.

It’s perplexing to think that a century later, rural areas are facing similar challenges.

Despite their resilience and innovative spirit, rural communities lag behind urban areas in terms of access to affordable utilities and resources.

Efforts to promote green energy initiatives further add to the burden on residents, with costs escalating and timelines seeming unrealistic.

Rural communities deserve equity in access to affordable and reliable energy sources, without discrimination based on their location.
