Biggs, Roy, and Massie Demand Answers on Jan. 6 Prosecutions in Garland Hearing
Three conservative House members recently wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland to request detailed information on the prosecutions related to the U.S. Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021.
Reps. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Thomas Massie, R-Ky., expressed concerns about the Department of Justice’s aggressive prosecutions of American citizens present at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, as reported by Politico.
In their letter, the lawmakers mentioned that they have previously requested information from the Department about the nature of arrests and prosecutions but have not received a satisfactory response, stating that the Department has ignored most of their inquiries.
The three Republicans, who are Chairmen of Subcommittees of the House Judiciary Committee, acknowledged that many of the prosecutions related to the Capitol events are appropriate, but they are concerned about individuals who may have been caught up in the sweep without committing a crime or being overcharged.
They emphasized the importance of this information, especially in light of concerns about mistreatment of defendants in federal custody and potential FBI involvement in the events of January 6.
Meanwhile, some sources suggest that the lawmakers’ letter is a distraction from efforts to hold Garland in contempt of Congress for not turning over audiotapes of President Joe Biden, as reported by Newsmax and The Wall Street Journal.
Garland is scheduled to appear before Jordan’s committee, where he plans to address concerns and accusations related to false narratives and the integrity of the Justice Department, as reported by Reuters.
