Conviction of Trump Could Damage Independent Support

A recent poll conducted by Politico Magazine/Ipsos revealed that a Donald Trump conviction in the New York criminal trial would not significantly impact Americans’ likelihood of supporting him in the upcoming general election.

The survey indicated that 44% of respondents stated that Trump’s conviction in Manhattan would not change their decision to support him for president. Among independent voters, however, 36% said they would be less likely to back Trump if he is found guilty.

Overall, 32% of Americans indicated that they would be less inclined to support Trump in the event of a conviction, while only 13% mentioned they would be more likely to support the former president, according to the Politico Magazine/Ipsos poll.

With Trump and President Joe Biden expected to face off in a close presidential election rematch, any notable shift in voter support could have a significant impact on the outcome.

A judge recently delayed Trump’s hush-money trial until at least mid-April, citing the need for more time to review extensive evidence obtained from a previous federal investigation into the matter.

The hush-money case revolves around allegations that Trump manipulated his company’s records to conceal payments to Michael Cohen, his former lawyer and now a prosecution witness, in connection with silencing porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The latest Politico Magazine/Ipsos poll highlighted the deeply divided opinions of Americans on the criminal charges Trump is facing, with political affiliation playing a significant role in shaping views.

While around half of the respondents believe Trump is guilty in cases such as falsifying business records, election subversion, and other charges, Democrats are more likely to believe in Trump’s guilt compared to Republicans. Independents also hold varying perspectives based on the specific cases mentioned.

Regarding Michael Cohen’s testimony against Trump, opinions are split between those who believe it will be honest and those who doubt its credibility, with Democrats and Republicans showing divergent views.

The poll also revealed that a majority of Americans do not support the idea of presidents being immune from criminal prosecution for alleged crimes committed during their term in office.
