Democratic Senator says Biden’s capacity to increase border security is limited

President Joe Biden’s ability to increase security at the U.S.-Mexico border through executive action is limited, according to a prominent Democratic lawmaker. Senator Chris Murphy, who played a key role in negotiating a bipartisan border security bill, emphasized the need for addressing the issue through legislation in Congress rather than executive orders.

In an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Murphy stated that sweeping executive action by Biden would likely be rejected by U.S. courts. He highlighted the challenges of conjuring resources and the potential for judicial interference if the president tried to enact drastic measures at the border.

Although Biden has expressed interest in using executive actions to address border security following the rejection of the Senate bill by Republicans, Senator Murphy cautioned against relying solely on executive orders. The bipartisan bill faced opposition from Republicans, particularly after former President Donald Trump voiced his disapproval.

While the number of illegal border crossings has decreased in comparison to record highs in December, Murphy attributed this trend to improved enforcement by Mexico. However, he emphasized the need for updating U.S. laws and increasing resources at the border to sustain these lower numbers.

Despite recent improvements, the issue of illegal immigration remains prevalent, with migrants and asylum seekers fleeing violence, economic hardship, and environmental challenges. The United Nations recognizes Mexico as a crucial transit point for individuals seeking refuge in the U.S.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean Pierre endorsed the Senate bill as a comprehensive solution to border security, emphasizing the policy changes and additional resources it would provide to enhance national security.
