Former President Donald Trump, despite his felony convictions in New York, has not lost his voting rights in Florida. Governor Ron DeSantis predicts that Trump’s vote in the upcoming election will be one of many demonstrating Florida’s strong Republican support.

DeSantis explained that rights are not taken away in Florida unless they have been removed in the convicting jurisdiction. This statement was made in response to Trump being found guilty by a New York City jury on 34 counts related to falsifying business records to cover payments made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

According to the Department of State website in Florida, a felony conviction in another state usually means the person is ineligible to vote in Florida, unless their conviction prevents them from voting in the convicting state as well. In New York, a law passed in 2021 restores voting rights to those released from incarceration, including those on parole or post-release supervision.

Neil Volz, deputy director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, pointed out that Trump would have to be incarcerated during the November election to lose his voting rights. The ACLU of Florida also emphasizes that voting rights for felons convicted outside of Florida are determined by the state of conviction.

DeSantis criticized the verdict in Trump’s case, calling it the result of a legal process influenced by politics. He suggested that the case was an example of the justice system being manipulated for political purposes.
