DeSantis invites Trump to debate on Newsmax

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a challenge to former President Donald Trump, who is leading the race for the GOP presidential nomination, to participate in a one-hour debate during his recent Newsmax town hall. DeSantis stressed the importance of continuing debates, even without the Republican National Committee overseeing them. 

During Monday night’s town hall, DeSantis expressed his desire to have a debate on Newsmax, suggesting that it could involve the former president, and could last for an hour. 

Trump had previously urged the RNC to cancel the remaining primary debates and focus on “stop the steal” efforts and the general election. DeSantis questioned whether it’s a good decision to let the RNC continue controlling the debates, suggesting that future debates may be less restrictive. 

DeSantis noted that Trump has declined to participate in the first three Republican primary debates and is not expected to attend the fourth debate. He emphasized the importance of debates in the nomination and election process in Iowa and New Hampshire. 

DeSantis also mentioned an upcoming debate with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and expressed his belief that there should be more debates, especially as the number of candidates narrows. 

DeSantis hopes that Trump will opt to participate and stressed that debates are important for the candidates to present themselves to the voters. 

DeSantis’ spokesperson discussed the importance of candidates showing up at events and engaging with voters in Iowa. Atchison emphasized the impact of in-person interactions on potential caucusgoers.
