District Attorney Bragg Submits Motion Requesting Contempt Charges Against Trump
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office prosecutors have filed a motion on Tuesday to hold former President Donald Trump in contempt for violating a gag order imposed by New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan through recent Truth Social posts.
As per Politico’s report, the motion alleges that Trump’s recent social media posts target known witnesses involved in the criminal proceeding, thus violating the order willfully and knowingly. The motion states that these violations are part of a deliberate strategy by Trump to obstruct the trial.
This motion follows Merchan’s decision to extend the gag order on Trump to curb his “inflammatory” speech. Trump responded by attacking his former attorney Michael Cohen and adult entertainer Stormy Daniels on Truth Social, accusing them of harming the country through lies and misrepresentations.
The motion asserts that Trump’s violation of the gag order is a deliberate attempt to intimidate the court and hinder the trial proceedings. The case revolves around allegations that Trump directed Cohen to make payments to Daniels and Karen McDougal to silence them about affairs Trump denies. Trump is accused of falsifying records to hide these payments.
The motion requests that the court impose sanctions on Trump, including fines of $1000 for each violation of the gag order or a 30-day jail term, or both. A hearing on the gag order violations is scheduled for April 23, and Trump’s attorneys have until Friday to respond in writing.
