On Sunday, while DOGE continues its efforts to identify waste, fraud, and corruption within the federal government, it uncovered thousands of cases where over $300 million in loans were disbursed to children.
According to DOGE, the Small Business Administration (SBA) had issued approximately 5,600 loans amounting to $312 million to debtors whose only registered owner was aged 11 or younger at the time the loan was granted. These loans were issued in 2020 and 2021, during the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the purpose of these loans remains unclear.
“While it is theoretically possible to have legitimate business structures involving minors, it is highly improbable for these 5,593 loans, especially since each borrowed an SSN with an incorrect name,” the agency stated.
“@DOGE and @SBAgov are collaborating to address this issue this week,” they further noted.
DOGE made the announcement in a post on X on Tuesday, also revealing that during 2020 and 2021, the SBA provided 3,095 loans totaling $333 million to borrowers who were listed as being over 115 years old.
The borrowers were still registered as living according to the Social Security database. One reported instance included a 157-year-old individual who secured $36,000 in loans. The loans comprised PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) and EIDL (Economic Injury Disaster Loan) loans.
During his address to Congress on Tuesday, President Donald Trump criticized situations where he claimed millions of individuals over 100 years old remained on the Social Security database, including one who was supposedly 360 years old.
“I know some elderly individuals but not quite that elderly,” Trump remarked. “3.47 million people between ages 120 and 129. 3.9 million from ages 130 to 139. 3.5 million from ages 140 to 149. And many of them are receiving funds, and we are investigating this right now.”
