Fundraising for Biden Surges to $1M Within 24 Hours of Jan 6 Speech
In the first 24 hours after President Joe Biden’s Jan. 6 anniversary speech, in which he warned that former president Donald Trump’s election this year would threaten American democracy, the current president’s campaign raised more than $1 million through online fundraising alone, according to data provided to The Hill.
Biden argued in his remarks on the Capitol riots that due to the grave threat of Trump being elected, the fate of democracy itself is on the ballot in this November’s election.
The Biden campaign stated that it sees preserving democracy as a political winner for the president as he attempts to win a second consecutive term in office.
“In election after election, democracy and freedom are mobilizing issues for the American people,” Biden’s deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty told The Hill. “In 2024, that will be no different, and we are encouraged by the strong grassroots enthusiasm we are seeing around the president’s core campaign message.”
The speech was Biden’s first major general election speech and was delivered near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, an important symbol of the American Revolution. He concentrated his remarks on the threat Trump may pose to democracy and emphasized what he sees as the stakes in a rematch against the former president.
Following the address, Trump accused Biden of “fearmongering” and said the president was only attacking him on the issue of democracy because he could not run on other issues.
