As reported by The Hill, Jewish representatives in the United States House of Representatives have launched the Congressional Jewish Caucus, which aims to provide an official platform to tackle rising antisemitism and the issues faced by the American Jewish community.
“Given the unprecedented rise of antisemitism in the United States and the challenges the American Jewish community has encountered following the tragic terrorist attacks of October 7, the formation of this Caucus is very necessary,” said Representative Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), a founding co-chair.
“I believe this caucus will unite Jewish members in the pursuit of common goals, fostering collaboration instead of requiring total agreement, and it will serve as a productive space to address important issues concerning the American Jewish community,” he added.
Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), who spearheaded the initiative, highlighted the importance of education and inter-community connections in addressing the concerns of Jewish Americans.
“With antisemitism at unprecedented levels in the United States, it is crucial that Jewish members of Congress have a formal Caucus to reflect the distinct viewpoint of the Jewish American community,” she stated.
Nadler will serve as co-chair alongside Representative Brad Schneider (D-Ill.).
“This Caucus is not just overdue — it is vital,” Schneider remarked. “I appreciate Debbie Wasserman Schultz for her leadership and I am honored to co-chair it alongside my friend Jerry Nadler.”
The caucus is focused on addressing legislation that impacts Jewish Americans, advocating against antisemitism, and fostering discussions among lawmakers. It will also create a platform for Jewish legislators to collaborate on community-related issues.
A report from the Anti-Defamation League found that antisemitic incidents reached an all-time high in 2023, increasing by 140%.
While informal Jewish legislative groups have existed, this marks the first official caucus established in the House.
