Hunter Biden Requests Dismissal of Tax Charges

Hunter Biden’s legal team will argue before U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi in federal court in Los Angeles on Wednesday to dismiss the criminal case accusing him of evading $1.4 million in taxes. They claim that prosecutors succumbed to political pressure from Republican lawmakers investigating his father, President Joe Biden.

Hunter Biden, age 54, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and his lawyers will present various legal challenges, including the assertion that he was unfairly singled out by prosecutors in response to Republican scrutiny. The trial is scheduled to begin in June, preceding a contentious November presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

In addition to the tax evasion case, Hunter Biden also faces another criminal case in federal court in Delaware related to allegedly purchasing a handgun while using illegal drugs. Special counsel David Weiss, who is overseeing both cases, has dismissed claims from Hunter Biden’s defense team as “conspiracy theories.”

The tax indictment against Hunter Biden outlines his foreign business dealings, which have been a focal point of Republican investigations into potential profiting by Joe Biden. However, no evidence implicating the president has been discovered thus far.

Hunter Biden’s defense team is also arguing that Weiss was improperly appointed as special counsel and that the case should be dismissed due to an earlier plea deal that fell through. The plea deal involved Hunter Biden pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax charges, but prosecutors claim it was never finalized.
