Kevin McCarthy Proposes a Bill for Temporary Funding
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is advocating for a short-term funding bill that would avoid a government shutdown but does not extend to the holiday season. McCarthy believes that Congress will not have enough time to pass all the appropriations bills by the end of the fiscal year on September 30. He wants the short-term continuing resolution to provide enough time for appropriations to be negotiated and agreed upon. McCarthy also wants to use the short-term CR to strengthen arguments against “Pelosi policies” and to go into the spending debate with a strong hand. House conservatives are seeking to cut federal spending and may oppose any stopgap funding bill that doesn’t address border policy and Department of Justice and military policies. House GOP leaders have a slim majority and may need Democrat support to pass any bills.
