Legislators Demand Border Closure Following Murder of Nursing Student

Recent events involving the murder of a 22-year-old nursing student by an illegal migrant have sparked outrage among congressional Republicans. This has led to calls for the shutdown of the southern border, as reported by The Daily Wire on Saturday.

Authorities arrested 26-year-old Venezuelan Jose Antonio Ibarra for the murder of Laken Hope Riley, a University of Georgia student. Ibarra had crossed into the United States illegally through El Paso, Texas, in September 2022 and was released due to limited detention space, according to Department of Homeland Security sources cited by NewsNation.

Riley’s body was discovered in jogging attire in a wooded area on the University of Georgia campus on Thursday, with blunt force trauma cited as the cause of death.

Ibarra is facing multiple charges, including murder with malicious intent, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, kidnapping, and more. NewsNation also reported that Ibarra had been arrested in New York five months ago on child injury charges. While Ibarra’s immigration status is still unconfirmed, his brother Diego was arrested on green card fraud charges.

Republicans have strongly condemned the incident, with some attributing it to President Joe Biden’s border policies. Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia blamed the administration for Riley’s death, stating that stricter border control and enforcement of immigration laws could have prevented the tragedy.

Other lawmakers, like Sen. J.D. Vance and Rep. Jim Banks, criticized the Biden administration for releasing illegal immigrants who then go on to commit violent crimes in the country. There have been calls for the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of border security.
