Lieberman tells Newsmax that Christie is a top contender for No Labels

No Labels co-founder Joe Lieberman said Chris Christie is a “straight talker, tough talker” who could be a very strong candidate on the group’s potential unity ticket for president.

“No Labels was formed about 12 years ago to try to break the partisan gridlock in Washington and get people in both parties working together to get something done for the country and their constituents, and we’ve made some real progress in Congress,” Lieberman said Friday during an appearance on Newsmax’s “American Agenda.”

“Now we’re looking at whether it makes sense to offer ballot lines to a third-choice ticket for president and vice president this year, which would be a bipartisan ticket,” he added.

No Labels has reached out to Chris Christie, who ended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination this week, about a possible role, Lieberman said.

“We’re focused on getting on the ballots in every state to make sure we have something to offer a bipartisan ticket. We’re also beginning to informally reach out to candidates, and it just seems to me that Chris Christie has shown himself to be an independent,” he continued. “He had a bipartisan problem-solving record in New Jersey, was a Republican — I’d say center-right Republican — elected in a democratic state … certainly a straight talker, tough talker. So I hope he’ll consider it, but we’re at least two months away from deciding whether we want to run a ticket … But I hope Chris Christie will think about a letting us keep his name in the mix.”
