Louisiana Representative Proposes Federal Prohibition on Gender Transition for Minors
Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., has called for a nationwide ban on gender transition procedures for minors, arguing that it amounts to “the mutilation of children.” Johnson, who chairs the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government, believes that children lack the capacity to make life-altering decisions and that adults should not be able to permanently alter their bodies. He also expressed concern that parents are being excluded from decisions regarding their children’s health and that medical professionals are pressuring children into gender-transition procedures without full understanding of the consequences.
The subcommittee recently held a hearing titled “The Dangers and Due Process Violations of ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ for Children,” where Chloe Cole, a 19-year-old advocate against gender-transition treatments, shared her own experience with puberty blockers and a double mastectomy. Cole referred to her situation as a “medical scandal” and called on lawmakers to end such procedures for vulnerable teenagers and children.
However, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., the ranking member on the Judiciary Committee, criticized the hearing, describing it as an “all-time low” for the Republican majority. He accused Republicans of framing the issue in a bullying and bigoted manner, suggesting that it should be approached with more serious discussion.
Currently, 21 states have enacted laws banning gender-transition procedures for minors, while courts have placed injunctions on similar laws in several other states.
