N.Y. Man Receives 50-Month Prison Term for Involvement in Capitol Riot
Thomas Sibick, a 37-year-old man from Buffalo, has been sentenced to over four years in prison for his involvement in the events of January 6, 2021, when a group of individuals stormed the Capitol. Sibick pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and robbery. He admitted to grabbing officer Michael Fanone’s police radio and badge after Fanone had been attacked with a stun gun. Sibick received a prison sentence of 50 months, along with 36 months of supervised release and a fine of over $7,500. Before sentencing, Sibick apologized to Fanone, who called him a “coward and a liar.” Sibick was part of a group attempting to breach the Capitol entrance and was photographed with a stolen police riot shield. Fanone emphasized the significance of his badge and radio, which were taken from him and used as trophies. Sibick’s attorney argued for home confinement followed by supervised release, citing his client’s bipolar disorder and the fact that his actions were less violent compared to others.
