Rep. Andrew Clyde Tells Newsmax: Foreign Aid Bill Puts America Last
Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., strongly criticized Speaker Mike Johnson’s foreign aid package on Newsmax Thursday, particularly the allocation of funds to allies like Israel and Ukraine.
“That’s an America last foreign policy bill,” Clyde exclaimed on “American Agenda.” “We are prioritizing the security of other nations’ borders over our own.”
Clyde is part of a faction of Republican congressmen who oppose the package, indicating that Johnson will require Democratic support to pass it.
In addition to providing aid to Israel and Ukraine, the package contains five bills that offer assistance to Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region. One of the bills, according to The Washington Post, tackles border security issues.
Clyde believes the bill will undermine Congress’s ability to secure the Southern border.
“This is not the initiative the speaker should be pushing,” Johnson stated. “Many of us are frustrated with him as this does not align with our previous stance. We must use leverage related to Ukraine to strengthen our borders.”
Despite his disagreement with Johnson, Clyde is not prepared to endorse a vote to remove him from the speakership. Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Thomas Massie of Kentucky have announced plans to call for Johnson’s removal.
“We’re not quite there yet,” Clyde remarked. “But this issue demands significant consideration. Demonstrating a commitment to securing our borders must take precedence, and this bill fails to do so.”
