Rep. McCaul Predicts Mayorkas Impeachment Could Occur Within Weeks

Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, suggested Friday that there may be enough support in the House to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “by the end of this month,” reports The Hill,

“If you look at the Founding Fathers, when they talked about impeachment, they talk about abuse of power, dereliction of duty,” McCaul told Fox News.

“That means instead of arresting, detaining, and removing illegal aliens, they have released them into our society by re-instituting catch and release. This has caused injurious harm to the fabric of America.”

The GOP-controlled House has already commenced a series of impeachment hearings against Mayorkas. House Homeland Security Chair Mark Green, R-Tenn, criticized Mayorkas during Wednesday’s hearing for his handling of migrant detentions and accused him of deliberately violating his oath of office and contributing to the border crisis.

“Secretary Mayorkas is the architect of the devastation that we have witnessed for nearly three years,” Green stated. “What we’re seeing here is a willful violation of his oath of office.”

Meanwhile, as Mayorkas asserted earlier this week that DHS was not encouraging migrants to enter the US illegally, despite sanctuary cities placing the needs of migrants above members of the local community, a border bill, tying aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan is being hashed out in the Senate.

In it, per the Washington Times, a provision states that 5,000 illegal immigrants a day, or roughly 150,000 a month, would be allowed into the U.S.

According to Customs and Border Protection’s data for the southwest land border, during the Trump administration, the number of illegal crossings per month ebbed around 75,000. But during the Biden administration, on average, only the lowest numbers show illegal migrant crossings touching 150,000. The mean has been around 200,000 illegal crossings a month, with the most recent figures setting a new record for fiscal year 2024, where CBP encountered 242,418 illegal migrants in Nov. 2023.
