Rep. Van Orden Tells Newsmax: Democrat Could Be Next Speaker if Johnson Removed
Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., warned against removing House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., cautioning that it could lead to Democrat Hakeem Jeffries taking over and potentially causing congressional gridlock during global crises.
Speaking to Newsmax on Wednesday, Van Orden expressed concerns about the current state of the House’s Republican Conference.
During an appearance on “American Agenda,” he mentioned that some members of the Republican Conference in the House of Representatives may unwittingly be helping to position Hakeem Jeffries as the next House Speaker.
Van Orden stressed the importance of maintaining stable leadership and criticized recent attempts to challenge Speaker Johnson’s position, citing potential disruptions in legislative proceedings.
He referenced past instances where changing leadership led to congressional stagnation, emphasizing the need for effective leadership to address urgent global issues such as the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, tensions in Israel, and the conflict in Ukraine.
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., reportedly supported a resolution to remove Johnson as Speaker on Tuesday, contributing to internal discord within the Republican Party, as per NBC News report.
Van Orden urged a focus on addressing global challenges rather than destabilizing leadership at a crucial time, highlighting Rep. Massie’s backing of a resolution co-sponsored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., as an example of growing dissent within the party.
