Reportedly, Trump and DeSantis hold private meeting in Florida
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has reportedly met privately with presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump ahead of an early May donor retreat in Palm Beach that may include potential 2024 GOP vice presidential candidates.
The former allies turned primary rivals met in Miami on Sunday, with DeSantis agreeing to assist Trump’s campaign in some capacity, as sources informed The Washington Post.
Despite not having spoken since before the 2024 primary cycle, the two decided to reconnect as the Trump campaign aims to leverage DeSantis’ strong donor network, sources revealed to the Post.
Unlike former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, DeSantis suspended his primary campaign after Iowa and before the New Hampshire polls closed, endorsing Trump immediately.
The reunion was facilitated by mutual acquaintance and Florida real estate broker Steve Witkoff, who reached out to the Trump campaign to help reestablish contact between DeSantis and Trump, according to the Post.
“It’s evident to me that a majority of Republican primary voters are inclined to give Donald Trump another opportunity,” DeSantis stated in a video message. “They witnessed his presidency being obstructed by persistent resistance, and they observe Democrats continuing to use legal tactics to attack him.”
Trump has previously reconciled with former critics, demonstrating a willingness to welcome back Republicans who align with the cause.
Newsmax contacted DeSantis’ communications director Bryan Griffin via email regarding the report but has yet to receive a response.
