Representative McCaul: Speaker Johnson Promised to Hold Ukraine Vote After Easter
House Speaker Mike Johnson is committed to bringing a vote for Ukraine war funding to the floor after Easter. However, his perceived lack of urgency on the matter is due to being in a challenging position, according to Rep. Michael McCaul on Sunday.
“I believe he’s committed because he understands national security,” the Texas Republican said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” “He relies on myself, the Chairman of Armed Services, House Intelligence for guidance on this issue and knows its significance.”
McCaul emphasized the importance of getting the funding bill approved as soon as possible, noting the dire situation in Ukraine. He highlighted the risks of losing to Putin and the potential implications for U.S. strength and alliances.
The motion to vacate was introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., in opposition to Johnson’s backing of the $1.2 trillion spending bill. So far, she is the sole voice calling for his removal.
Addressing concerns about the motion’s viability, McCaul acknowledged the slim Republican majority in the House and the risks of disrupting the GOP’s balance of power. He stressed the need for functional governance amid global crises.
Discussing recent attacks by ISIS-K in Moscow and broader security threats, McCaul underscored the ongoing challenges facing the U.S. on multiple fronts, including Europe, Haiti, and the Indo-Pacific region.
