Republican Lawmaker Predicts Mayorkas Will Face Public Backlash Due to Impeachment

Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., previewed the impending impeachment vote of Alejandro Mayorkas, saying that the Department of Homeland Security secretary is going to pay the “public relations price” for the bad policies of his boss, President Joe Biden.

Mayorkas is expected to get impeached by House Republicans in a vote Tuesday night.

“This is the Biden policy, but Mayorkas has been an uncooperative Cabinet secretary. He’s violated the law, he’s not been truthful to Congress, and Congress is fed up with it,” Hill told Fox Business. “So this is like the ultimate effort by Congress to say, ‘Look, you don’t have your act together at the Cabinet agency, and the president certainly doesn’t have his act together,’ so we’re taking this action.”

Hill added that he expects this second impeachment vote “to be successful” now that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., is back on Capitol Hill to vote. The effort last week failed in Scalise’s absence, 216-214, with Rep. Blake Moore, R-Utah, changing his vote to “nay” in order to break a tie, allowing the resolution to be reconsidered.

Mayorkas said he won’t resign if he’s impeached, but he’s going down in the history books nonetheless, Hill said.

“The president could take executive action to do it today,” Hill said. “It doesn’t need more money. It needs action. And this is what’s disappointing to people, and that’s why Mayorkas is going to pay this public relations price by being impeached for the first time since 1876.”

The three Republican holdouts are not expected to switch their votes this time either: Reps. Ken Buck, R-Colo., Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., and Tom McClintock, R-Calif. But Scalise will be the vote to clinch impeachment, assuming no other no votes.

Gallagher announced after last week’s vote that he would not seek reelection.
