On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee, consisting of 27 members with 14 Republicans and 13 Democrats, approved Kennedy’s progression with a narrow vote of 14-13.
Despite expectations of a unanimous Democratic opposition, the focus turned to GOP Senator Bill Cassidy, chair of the Senate Health Committee and a physician from Louisiana.
Prior to the vote, Cassidy made a last-minute endorsement, signaling a party-line support for Kennedy.
“Your history of eroding trust in vaccines through unsupported or misleading claims raises concerns for me,” Cassidy expressed to Kennedy at the conclusion of Thursday’s confirmation hearing.
Kennedy exited the presidential race in August 2024, endorsing President Donald Trump. Shortly after the November election, Trump announced his intention to nominate Kennedy to his Cabinet.
The HHS nominee has indicated that he plans to refocus the agencies under his direction on promoting a healthier lifestyle, which includes updating outdated guidelines and addressing issues related to ultra-processed foods and other fundamental causes of chronic diseases.
“Our nation will not face destruction due to incorrect marginal tax rates. We will be in peril if we mismanage this issue,” Kennedy stated Thursday, highlighting chronic disease concerns. “I am uniquely positioned to lead efforts to combat this epidemic.”
