Senator Bernie Sanders, aged 82, declares his bid for reelection

Running for a fourth Senate term as an independent, Sanders previously served as a Democratic congressman for 16 years and continues to caucus with the Democrats.

In a video announcing his candidacy, Sanders emphasized the significance of the upcoming 2024 election, describing it as potentially the most consequential in recent memory.

Addressing key issues, Sanders raised questions about the future of American democracy, income inequality, government functionality, and the influence of wealthy donors in politics.

Reflecting on his past work and potential contributions, Sanders highlighted his role as chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and his commitment to representing the needs of Vermonters.

Regarding the conflict in Gaza, Sanders expressed support for Israel’s right to self-defense but criticized the government’s actions against the Palestinian people as disproportionate and harmful. He called for reevaluation of U.S. financial support to Israel.

If reelected, Sanders pledged to continue advocating for progressive policies and fighting for the interests of the American people.
