Senator Marsha Blackburn Criticizes Biden’s Decision to Provide Free Healthcare to Migrants

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., along with other senators, criticized the Biden administration’s proposal to extend Obamacare to over 100,000 illegal migrants protected under the 2012 DACA program.

In a joint letter to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra, Blackburn, along with Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, and Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., expressed their concerns about the economic impact of this decision by President Biden.

The Biden administration recently announced that certain immigrants who were illegally brought to the U.S. as children will now have access to federally run health insurance. Approximately 100,000 participants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are expected to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace and the Basic Health Program.

The senators criticized the administration for diverting attention from the national security and humanitarian crisis at the border by implementing this policy. They emphasized the strain it will put on struggling American taxpayers.

The DACA enrollees will receive financial assistance, including tax credits and reduced out-of-pocket costs, effective November 1. Previously, DACA recipients were not allowed to enroll in Obamacare, but could access health insurance through other means.

Blackburn and her fellow Republican senators raised questions about the costs and implications of this new policy, demanding answers from Becerra by May 15.
