Senator Ricketts Tells Newsmax That Mayorkas Should Face Impeachment Proceedings
Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., told Newsmax on Thursday that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D, N.Y., is incorrect in stating that the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was due to a policy disagreement.
“He’s completely mistaken,” Ricketts said on “National Report.” “This is truly terrible what Leader Schumer is doing.”
The Senate voted on Wednesday to dismiss the impeachment charges against Mayorkas without holding a trial, with every Democrat, led by Schumer, voting in favor of dismissal.
Ricketts criticized Mayorkas for a memo written to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2021, stating that a person should not be deported solely for crossing the border illegally.
“That is blatantly disregarding the law,” Ricketts said.
The following year, Mayorkas claimed to the House Judiciary Committee that the border was secure and that he had complete control over it.
“That is simply not true,” Ricketts stated. “That should be reason enough for us to push for a trial and examine the evidence to determine if he was deliberately ignoring the law. Lying to Congress is a felony, which falls under the category of high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Ricketts pointed out that out of the 21 individuals previously impeached by Congress, 17 had a trial, while the other four either resigned or were expelled.
“What Schumer is doing is deviating from the established precedent of holding a trial,” Ricketts added. “We should have conducted a trial to review the evidence. Chuck Schumer has undermined the process by reducing this issue to a mere policy disagreement.”
