Speaker: GOP Will Not Be Rushed on Senate Foreign Aid
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is standing firm on Valentine’s Day, resisting pressure from the Senate to take up its $95 billion foreign aid package. He wants to prioritize securing U.S. borders before allocating such a large sum of money to other countries.
Johnson expressed his concerns during a House GOP leadership news conference on Wednesday, emphasizing the need to prioritize the needs of the American people over foreign aid. He stated that the Republican-led House will not be forced into passing a foreign aid bill opposed by most Republican senators and that does not address border security.
He urged President Joe Biden to sit down with House GOP leaders to discuss issues related to the border and national security. Johnson also highlighted the power Biden has to address border security issues without additional funding, referring to measures that were in place during the Trump administration.
Johnson underscored the importance of prioritizing American needs before addressing global issues, stressing the need for common sense, security, stability, and sanity. He expressed concern over the lack of focus on America’s border and security in the latest bill sent by the Senate.
