Survey Finds 32% Support Candidate with Matching Abortion Stance, According to Gallup_POLL
A new Gallup poll released Thursday revealed that 32% of U.S. voters will only vote for a candidate who shares their views on abortion, a record-high percentage.
This percentage has increased by 4 points since last year and 8 points since 2020, with the surge attributed to voters who support abortion in response to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Of the 32% of registered voters who only support candidates with similar views on abortion, 23% are pro-choice, 8% are pro-life, and 1% are undecided, as reported by Gallup.
The poll also found that the number of voters who consider abortion as an important factor in their voting decision has decreased by 11 points to 45%, the lowest mark since 2012.
Furthermore, the intensity of pro-life voters has decreased during the same period. Pro-choice voters are now 18 points ahead of pro-life voters in saying they will only vote for candidates who align with their views on abortion.
Gallup noted that this is the third consecutive year where pro-choice voters outnumber pro-life voters in the U.S., marking a shift from the pro-life advantage seen between 1996 and 2020.
Additionally, the survey found that 51% of respondents believe abortion should be legal under most or all circumstances, an increase of 4 points from last year. 54% consider abortion morally acceptable, up by 2 points, while 37% think it is morally wrong, down by 4 points from the previous year.
The percentage of Democrats identifying as pro-choice has increased by 16 points to 86% since 2021, prior to the Dobbs decision, according to Gallup.
The analysis by Gallup highlighted the changing dynamics of being a pro-choice or pro-life candidate in higher office following the 2022 Dobbs decision. Pro-choice candidates now have a significant advantage in attracting voters who prioritize abortion in their voting decisions.
Gallup conducted the survey from May 1-23, polling 1,024 adults, including 929 registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
