Tennessee Hospital Under Investigation for Federal Civil Rights Violation Regarding Transgender Records
Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, is currently under investigation by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights for allegedly turning over private medical records of transgender patients to the state Attorney General. The investigation comes after two patients filed a lawsuit against the medical center, claiming that their personal health information was not protected. The Attorney General’s office denies any knowledge of the civil rights investigation and argues that it would be retaliatory and politicized. This controversy comes after the medical center paused gender transition procedures due to pressure from state lawmakers and the passing of legislation prohibiting gender transition surgeries and hormone treatments for minors.
