Trump is Using the NYC Trial to Postpone Documents Case, Claims Jack Smith

According to a report by Newsweek, special counsel Jack Smith alleged in a court filing that former President Donald Trump is using his current criminal trial in New York City as a way to delay his upcoming case regarding his handling of classified documents in Florida.

In the filing submitted on Monday, Smith claimed that Trump is trying to postpone the Florida case, where he is accused of illegally retaining classified documents, by using his New York trial as an excuse. Trump’s legal team argues that they will be too preoccupied with the criminal trial in New York to meet the deadlines set by the judge in the Florida case.

Smith pointed out that Judge Aileen Cannon had set a deadline of May 9 for the defense to submit expert witness disclosures and stated that the Court was well aware of Trump’s New York trial when that date was established.

The filing also emphasized that Trump’s attorneys’ argument about being too busy preparing for the New York trial does not justify delaying the Florida case, especially since the defense has had months to complete the necessary work.

Smith concluded by urging the Court to reject Trump’s latest delay tactic and uphold the established deadline for the Florida case.
