Trump Questions Labeling Lawyer Payment as ‘Legal Expense’
Despite being under a gag order as his legal expense case nears closing arguments on Tuesday, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is criticizing Democrat Judge Juan Merchan, Democrat Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and labeling it as “another Crooked Joe Biden election interference hoax.”
In a series of scathing posts on Truth Social, Trump expressed his frustration with the trial that could soon go to the Manhattan jury after the Memorial Day weekend and Monday holiday.
“Let’s put the president in jail for 150 years because a LEGAL EXPENSE to a lawyer was called, by a bookkeeper, a LEGAL EXPENSE to a lawyer!” Trump wrote.
Allegations have been made by Bragg’s prosecutors that the Trump organization labeling $130,000 in payments to former attorney Michael Cohen as a “legal expense” constitutes a state criminal offense. The payments were made to adult film actor Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign to keep her quiet about her alleged affair with Trump.
Trump pointed out in another Truth Social post that “LEGAL EXPENSE = LEGAL EXPENSE!!!”
Trump argued that the case is an illegal election campaign contribution and that the charges are a result of an attempt by Democrats to interfere in the election.
Trump asserted that the case is being tried in a state court for what would typically be under the jurisdiction of the Federal Elections Commission. He warned that the case is biased towards Democrats and funded by liberal billionaire activist George Soros.
Despite the evidence and legal theories being questioned by media and legal experts like Alan Dershowitz, Trump believes that the justice system might not be fair in the Democratic-leaning district of Manhattan.
As the case moves forward, Trump emphasized the importance of having a fair and honest judge.
Trump concluded his social media posts by citing The Wall Street Journal’s opinion on the trial, which raised doubts about the evidence presented by the prosecution.
The legal expense case is expected to proceed with closing statements and jury deliberation following the Memorial Day holiday. A verdict could be reached by the end of the week.
