This choice to visit Saudi Arabia for his inaugural foreign trip signals a strengthened bond between the Trump administration and Gulf nations, particularly when compared to the Biden administration’s approach.
During his 2017 visit to Saudi Arabia, President Trump was greeted with extravagance, accompanied by a procession of horses carrying American and Saudi flags amidst much fanfare.
The forthcoming trip coincides with Saudi Arabia’s role in hosting ceasefire discussions involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, showcasing its significant involvement in mediating to resolve the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Additionally, the potential for “normalizing” relations with Israel remains on the table, hinging on the establishment of a “Palestinian state” in Gaza—an initiative that Israel opposes.
A report from Axios indicated that discussions regarding including a stop in Israel during the May visit have yet to materialize among Israeli officials.
Earlier this month, Trump informed reporters in the Oval Office that he is likely to travel to Saudi Arabia “within the next month and a half.”
The 47th president aims to bolster economic relations between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, which includes an infusion of hundreds of billions of dollars from Saudi investments into U.S. enterprises.
“I will be going to Saudi Arabia. Typically, one would visit the UK first. During my last trip to Saudi Arabia, they committed to $450 billion,” Trump stated.
“This time, I said I would go if they agreed to invest a trillion dollars in American companies. This involves a trillion dollars’ worth of purchases over four years. They consented to this, so I will be making the trip,” he added.
However, it remains uncertain whether Trump will engage in meetings with Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia as he did in May 2017, or if he plans to visit other regional countries.
This month, Trump praised Saudi Arabia for its pledge to invest $1 trillion with U.S. companies over the next four years.
Furthermore, another Gulf nation has announced substantial investments in American companies, with the United Arab Emirates committing to inject $1.4 trillion into the U.S. over a decade, according to the Trump administration.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is located at the southeastern end of the Arabian Peninsula, bordered by Oman and Saudi Arabia.
