US Secretly Provides Long-range Missiles to Ukraine for Strike on Russian-held Areas, Officials Claim

Ukraine has recently begun using long-range ballistic missiles provided by the United States, targeting Russian military installations in Crimea and other occupied areas. This marks the first time Ukraine is utilizing such missiles, significantly extending their striking distance. The United States has increased support by providing additional long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) in a new military aid package.

These long-range missiles have been a crucial request from Ukrainian leaders as they offer the ability to strike Russian targets further away, enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. The U.S. included a substantial number of these missiles in a $300 million aid package, with additional support totaling about $1 billion. The exact quantity of missiles provided in recent deliveries remains undisclosed.

Prior to this development, the U.S. had hesitated to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles, concerned about potential escalation in the conflict with Russia. However, after evaluating the situation, military planners decided that now was the appropriate time to provide these advanced weapons to Ukraine. These long-range ATACMS are crucial for targeting Russian logistics nodes beyond the front lines.

Despite the covert nature of the missile deliveries, Ukraine has not publicly acknowledged their receipt. The U.S. administration had previously warned Russia that any deployment of long-range ballistic missiles in Ukraine would prompt a similar response from Washington, which has now materialized with the provision of ATACMS to Kyiv.

The decision to provide these long-range missiles comes as Russia has intensified its attacks in eastern Ukraine, taking advantage of delays in U.S. weapons deliveries. The use of cluster munitions in the missiles aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russian aggression.

The recent military aid package includes support for Ukraine, Israel, and other allies, addressing critical shortages in artillery and air defense systems. With the war entering its third year, Ukraine’s access to advanced weaponry like long-range ATACMS is essential for countering Russian offensives and restoring peace in the region.
