Columbia’s students involved with Hamas believe their school is the center of the Middle East
The protests at Columbia University in support of Hamas are driven by the belief that what happens at the university impacts events in the Levant. Students feel that they are at the forefront of fighting against genocide, making their actions exciting and significant.
While the protests at Columbia are important in terms of university governance and rules, they do not hold the world-historical significance that the students attribute to them.
The protestors claim that Columbia’s financial investments enable Israel’s actions against Palestinians, a controversial viewpoint considering the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The students accuse Columbia of suppressing their voices and erasing the Palestinian struggle through policy decisions and emails, creating a repressive environment on campus.
Ultimately, the protestors argue that Columbia’s alleged complicity in genocide is based on the BDS agenda and the belief that any institution not divesting from Israeli companies is morally responsible for Israel’s actions.
However, the protestors’ refusal to condemn terrorism or acknowledge the complexities of the conflict undermines their moral stance.
