The push for bilingual education will harm migrant children’s chances for success

Big cities like New York City, Denver, and Chicago are in urgent need of bilingual education teachers as more migrant children are enrolling in schools.

However, some argue that bilingual education may not be the best option for these children and could lead to future struggles and poverty.

It is suggested that non-English-speaking students receive intensive English instruction upon arrival at school and then transition to English-only classrooms.

The educational system is divided on this issue, with some labeling the emphasis on English as “xenophobic.”

Despite the controversy, a mere 4% of eighth graders and 3% of 12th graders in bilingual classes nationwide are proficient in math and reading, according to National Assessment of Educational Progress test scores.

These statistics highlight the need for a more effective approach to language instruction for immigrant children, focusing on English proficiency as a key factor in academic success.

Some argue that the current bilingual education system creates chaos in the classroom and fails to adequately prepare students for academic achievement.

Ultimately, the goal should be to prioritize English language instruction for all students, regardless of their background or native language.
