The White House Ignored China’s Infiltration of Our Government
Throughout the years, I have consistently warned about the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to infiltrate American society and government at all levels.
The security and sovereignty of our nation depend on our ability to counter this threat.
During my time as secretary of state in 2020, I delivered this crucial message to the National Governors Association, which was chaired by then-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Unfortunately, it seems that both Cuomo and his successor, Governor Hochul, did not take my warnings seriously.
This week, Linda Sun, an aide who had worked in the offices of both governors, was charged with acting as an agent of the Chinese Communist Party.
The unsealed indictment disclosed that Sun and her husband had received millions in laundered cash from the Chinese Communist Party and had actively worked to advance the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP.
Among other treasonous acts, Sun obstructed Taiwanese officials from contacting the governor’s office since 2016, ensured that speeches and press releases aligned with CCP-approved language, provided CCP officials access to high-level state government discussions such as COVID response efforts, and even participated in a CCP-organized protest against the democratically-elected president of Taiwan while holding a senior New York state official position.
These revelations may be shocking to some, but they exemplify the modus operandi of the CCP, which seeks to wield influence at every level of American society, from the federal government to local PTA meetings.
We cannot ignore this threat as something distant; the CCP is already within our borders.
During my tenure as secretary of state in the Trump administration, we took action to halt the dissemination of CCP propaganda through Confucius Institutes on college campuses across the country, designated the Confucius Institute program as a foreign mission, and shut down the largest espionage ring in US history by closing the CCP’s consulate in Houston.
Neglect of Duty
The current Biden-Harris administration has neglected the critical task of safeguarding America from CCP infiltration.
For instance, a Chinese spy balloon was allowed to traverse the US without consequence, the China Initiative aimed at countering CCP espionage was dismantled, and the open southern border has facilitated the illegal entry of Chinese nationals into the country.
Last year, Biden welcomed CCP Chairman Xi Jinping with open arms, despite increasing CCP aggression and intimidation of Americans who spoke out against the CCP’s policies.
Kamala Harris’ reluctance to address the CCP raises questions about the administration’s stance on this crucial issue.
The reality is that leaders like Biden, Harris, and Hochul are living in a fantasy world where they believe in building a cooperative relationship with the CCP based on mutual understanding and fair competition. This dangerous delusion only emboldens the CCP to expand its influence within our country.
America’s security hinges on recognizing the CCP’s ideological hostility towards the US, promoting transparency and reciprocity in our dealings with China, and safeguarding American interests from CCP encroachment.
We must elect leaders like Donald Trump who understand this threat and are committed to preserving America’s freedom and security.
Mike Pompeo served as US secretary of state from 2018 to 2021.
