Clem Burke, the drummer for Blondie, has passed away at the age of 70.

The band announced that Burke had been battling cancer, describing his passing as a “significant loss.”

He participated in every studio album of the Debbie Harry-led group since he joined shortly after their inception in 1975.

Burke was part of the band from their self-titled debut album, through the iconic 1978 release *Parallel Lines*, and up to 2017’s *Pollinator*.

In a statement shared on Blondie’s Instagram account, Debbie Harry and the band’s guitarist, Chris Stein, expressed: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the loss of our dear friend and bandmate Clem Burke, who fought cancer privately.”

“Clem was more than a drummer; he was the heartbeat of Blondie.”

“His talent, vigor, and love for music were extraordinary, and his impact on our sound and achievements is priceless.”

“Beyond music, Clem served as an inspiration both on stage and off. His lively spirit, contagious enthusiasm, and unwavering work ethic influenced everyone fortunate to know him.”

“Clem’s influence reached far beyond Blondie; as a self-identified ‘rock and roll survivalist,’ he collaborated with many legendary artists.”

Burke played on Iggy Pop’s 1982 album *Zombie Birdhouse* and also worked with notable artists like Bob Dylan, The Ramones, Pete Townshend from The Who, and Joan Jett.

The statement continued to emphasize that Burke made an “indelible mark on every project he encountered.”

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Clem’s family, friends, and fans worldwide. His legacy will endure through the vast amount of music he created and the innumerable lives he impacted.”

Burke, known for his contributions to classic songs like *Call Me*, *Heart Of Glass*, and *One Way Or Another*, made his last live performance with Blondie last year.
