Fate of Couple who Disappeared Following Yacht Hijacking by Fugitive Convicts Suggests They Are Likely Deceased | Global News
According to police, an American couple who went missing a week ago after their catamaran was hijacked by three escaped convicts are believed to be dead.
Police Commissioner Don McKenzie revealed that the prisoners had fled custody on Grenada on February 18th and took control of a catamaran called Simplicity – with Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry on board the next day.
“Information indicates that while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they got rid of the occupants,” Commissioner McKenzie stated.
The couple was last seen on the night of the prisoners’ escape, and their boat was later spotted leaving Grenada late at night at an unusual speed.
The three fugitives were apprehended by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, McKenzie said, with a team from Grenada sent to collaborate on a thorough investigation.
Both island nations are approximately 85 nautical miles apart.
Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, were being held at the South Saint George Police Station near Grenada’s southwestern tip on charges of violent robbery when they escaped.
Mitchell also faces charges of rape, attempted rape, and indecent assault.

St. Vincent police reported finding the ship with no bodies but scattered items and possible blood on the deck.
The suspects appeared in court in St. Vincent on Monday for four immigration charges, to which they pleaded guilty, and their sentencing is scheduled for March 4th.
Despite presuming the couple is deceased, St. Vincent Police Superintendent Junior Simmons mentioned that the search for the missing individuals is ongoing.
