Georgia Appeals Court Removes Fani Willis from Trump Election Case
The state’s Court of Appeals stated, ‘We conclude that it erred by failing to disqualify DA Willis and her office.’
A Georgia appeals court has disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the criminal case related to election matters against President-elect Donald Trump and around a dozen co-defendants, although the indictment remains intact.
In 2023, Trump and his co-defendants were charged by Willis’s office for allegedly attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia. Trump and the other co-defendants have pleaded not guilty.
However, the case faced complications in early 2024 after it was disclosed that Willis had a relationship with the special prosecutor for the case, Nathan Wade. In March, a Fulton County judge ruled that Willis could continue as prosecutor if Wade stepped down, which he subsequently did. Trump and several co-defendants appealed the judge’s ruling to the Georgia Court of Appeals, which delivered its decision regarding Willis on Thursday morning.
“After thoroughly reviewing the trial court’s findings in its ruling, we conclude that it erred by failing to disqualify DA Willis and her office,” the Georgia Court of Appeals stated in its ruling.
