Tragedy struck in the US state of Indiana as five children lost their lives in a house fire.

An 11-year-old child, the oldest of the group, was airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of burns.

Fire chief Carl Buchanon revealed that the youngest child was only 17 months old, and an adult who sustained minor injuries attempted to rescue some of the children but was driven back by heavy smoke and flames.

Fire crews in South Bend, a city with a population of over 100,000, battled the blaze for approximately three hours.
