US Supreme Court rules in favor of emergency abortions in Idaho | US News

The US Supreme Court has approved emergency abortions in Idaho in cases where a patient’s health is seriously at risk.

Hospitals in the northwestern state can now perform emergency abortions to protect the health of patients facing critical health concerns.

This decision comes after the overturning of Roe v Wade two years ago, which led Idaho and 13 other states to ban abortion at all stages of pregnancy with very limited exceptions. This move aimed to restrict women’s rights following the landmark decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion.

The Supreme Court initially allowed the ban, which allows abortion in cases where a pregnant patient’s life is at risk, to take effect.

However, Idaho doctors have reported that several women have had to be airlifted out of state for abortion procedures to prevent infection, hemorrhage, and other severe health risks.

According to Bloomberg, the Supreme Court briefly posted an opinion on their website suggesting that they should not have intervened in the case so quickly. They reinstated a court order allowing hospitals in Idaho to perform emergency abortions, as reported by the US outlet.

The Court later confirmed the decision on Thursday, after acknowledging that a document had been mistakenly posted on Wednesday.

“The Court’s Publications Unit inadvertently and briefly uploaded a document to the Court’s website.

“The Court’s opinion in Moyle v United States and Idaho v United States will be issued in due course,” said court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe in a statement.

This ruling is expected to impact emergency care in other states with strict abortion laws.

Following the constitutional ruling two years ago, many Republican-controlled states began enforcing abortion restrictions. Reports have already emerged of pregnant women being turned away from emergency rooms in the US following the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision.
