Australian Lawmakers Approve Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitism

There has been a surge in anti-Semitism in Australia, with incidents including vandalism, arson attacks, and a potential bomb threat involving a caravan full of explosives.

During the recent session of Parliament before the elections, Australian MPs joined together to condemn anti-Semitism. Teal MP Allegra Spender led a motion denouncing the increasing attacks on Jewish institutions and communities, which received bipartisan support.

The motion outlined that Parliament:

  1. Deplores the rise in anti-Semitism, including violent attacks on synagogues, schools, homes, and childcare centers;
  2. Condemns anti-Semitism unequivocally; and
  3. Commits all parliamentarians to work together to combat it.

Spender emphasized the importance of setting a standard against anti-Semitism: “This is not just about laws but also about culture. We must lead by example. The message from this parliament must be clear – we stand united against anti-Semitism.”

‘You Will Be Caught, You Will Be Punished’: Albanese

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, addressing criticism for the government’s delayed response, defended their actions while endorsing the motion.

“This House condemns anti-Semitism and acknowledges that Jewish people have endured this hateful prejudice for generations. I echo what I said after the Oct. 7 attacks in 2023. This kind of prejudice has no place in Australia,” Albanese stated.

Albanese assured the Jewish community that real actions, not just words, are necessary to combat anti-Semitism.

From May 2024 to January 2025, Australia witnessed numerous anti-Semitic incidents, including vandalism, arson, and a major firebombing at the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne, laying bare the intensity of the issue.

Dutton Slams Government’s ‘Weak’ Response

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton criticized the government for their delayed and weak response, calling for a stronger stance against anti-Semitic activities.

Dutton highlighted the escalation of protests into university demonstrations, causing harassment towards Jewish students and academics in institutions that once championed inclusivity and academic freedom.
