Bakery Bombing in Russian-Occupied Ukraine Leaves 28 Dead, According to Moscow-Backed Officials

Ukrainian forces shelled and killed a minimum of 28 people at a bakery in the city of Lysychansk, currently under Russian occupation, according to officials appointed by Moscow.

Local leader Leonid Pasechnik confirmed that at least one child was among the fatalities on Saturday. He also reported that emergency services managed to rescue 10 individuals from under the rubble.

Officials in Kyiv refrained from commenting on the incident.

Both Moscow and Kyiv have resorted to longer-range attacks this winter due to the stagnant nature of the front line, spanning 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) in the nearly 2-year-old war.

According to a statement from Ukraine’s General Staff on Sunday, Ukrainian forces have faced intense Russian attacks in the past 24 hours, with ongoing assaults along the front line. Particularly fierce fighting has been observed in cities such as Avdiivka, Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, and Zaporizhzhia.

A Russian artillery strike in the frontline town of Toretsk resulted in the death of a civilian and left two others injured. The regional governor, Vadym Filashkin, reported the attack, which occurred less than 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from Bakhmut.

Meanwhile, the military administration for Ukraine’s northern Sumy region disclosed that Russian forces carried out 16 separate attacks in the region the previous day, targeting border communities such as Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, and Esman. Gen. Serhii Naiev, commander of the Ukrainian Joint Forces, stated that Russian sabotage and reconnaissance units were thwarted by Kyiv’s troops while attempting to cross the border in the Sumy region.

With Ukrainian forces concentrated in the eastern regions of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv, the reported incursion indicates that Moscow might be testing vulnerabilities on a new front to push Ukrainian resources to the limit.
