BC Premier Calls on PM to Share Foreign Interference Info to Safeguard Province
Premier David Eby emphasizes the urgent need for information from Canada’s spy agency in order to tackle suspected foreign interference at the provincial level in British Columbia.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Mr. Eby expresses the lack of essential information required to detect and address any alleged foreign interference that might be taking place in the province.
The premier highlights that the sharing of information from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has been significantly delayed and urges Mr. Trudeau to promptly enact the CSIS Act amendments recently presented to Parliament.
According to Public Safety Canada, the proposed amendments aim to enable CSIS to disclose information more broadly beyond the federal government.
Mr. Eby’s letter outlines credible suspicions of potential state-level interference involving B.C. residents with ties to China, Iran, Ukraine, India, and Russia. Additionally, concerns are raised regarding transnational organized crime activities, as well as expert analysis linking recent cybersecurity incidents targeting provincial government emails to state-affiliated actors.
Mr. Eby’s correspondence also calls on the prime minister to furnish B.C. with crucial information prior to the CSIS bill’s passage, aiding in safeguarding the province’s populace and democratic institutions against external interference.
