Canada imposes sanctions on Belarus on the anniversary of their election

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mélanie Joly, has announced sanctions on 10 individuals and six entities to mark the anniversary of the fraudulent 2020 presidential elections in Belarus.

The sanctions were implemented in response to the continuous and systematic human rights violations in Belarus, as well as the support for Russia’s unlawful war against Ukraine.

The targeted list includes judges who Canada believes have unjustly sentenced citizens for expressing their opposition to the 2020 elections.

Additionally, individuals involved in coordinating military production with Russia in Belarus are also subject to sanctions.

The sanctioned entities are engaged in the production and maintenance of military equipment used in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as state-owned enterprises that have intimidated and dismissed employees involved in peaceful protests and strikes following the 2020 election.

These measures have been imposed in collaboration with the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
