Carney and Trump Set to Meet in Person Soon, According to Canadian PM’s Office

Carney also engaged in a discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Following his triumph in the April 28 election, Prime Minister Mark Carney has communicated with U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The PMO announced that President Trump extended his congratulations to Carney on his electoral success.

“Both leaders emphasized the necessity for Canada and the United States to collaborate as independent, sovereign nations for their mutual benefit,” a statement from the PMO on April 29 noted.

The two leaders have agreed to meet face-to-face in the “near future,” as per the PMO.

This marks the second occasion the two leaders have communicated since assuming their current roles.

Previously, they conversed via phone on March 28, following Carney’s election as the leader of the Liberal Party, succeeding former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and taking on the role of prime minister.

The PMO stated that the two leaders had a “very constructive conversation” regarding the ties between Canada and the United States.

During the call, Carney acknowledged that Trump had shown respect for Canada’s sovereignty. Nevertheless, Carney noted during the election campaign that the president had, under pressure from reporters, referred to Canada as the 51st state.

To date, Trump has yet to publicly comment on the results of Canada’s election. However, on election day, he issued a Truth Social post, wishing Canadians “good luck” and reiterating his previous remark about wanting Canada to join the United States.

“Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, boost your military might to the highest level globally, and exponentially grow your businesses across various sectors, with zero tariffs or taxes, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st State of the United States of America,” he wrote.

Carney has consistently mentioned that Trump “wants to break us so America can own us,” identifying the Trump presidency as the “biggest crisis in our lifetimes.”

According to the PMO, Carney also had a conversation with French President Macron the day after the election.

Macron delivered his congratulations to Carney, as noted in an April 29 statement. The two had previously met when Carney visited Paris in March.

“Following their meeting in Paris last month, President Macron and the Prime Minister discussed their continued efforts to enhance defense and commercial relationships between their countries,” stated the PMO.

They agreed to maintain close communication moving forward.

During their meeting, Carney and Macron touched on subjects including artificial intelligence, critical minerals, clean energy, and free trade, according to a March 17 news release.

The two have initiated a new bilateral partnership aimed at improving intelligence sharing on “significant” threats and fortifying cybersecurity, as stated in the release.

The PMO highlighted the “rich and strong relationship” between the two countries, built on shared history, common language, and values such as democracy and human rights.
